Au Borinage

Au Borinage is a personal project by Karin Borghouts, in which she spent a year as artist-in-residence at the Maison Van Gogh in Petit-Wasmes. She started photographing landscapes, streets and terrils, and became fascinated by the region's heavy mining past. Van Gogh stayed there for two years and it was here that he chose to become an artist. Gradually Karin decided to photograph people in special locations; artists, sons and daughters of miners, owners of old mining sites. .... Heartwarming contacts they were. Each photograph was told a story, from which, with the help of assistants, she made four videos. In doing so, her artistic project went far beyond her familiar field of photography, with the aim of drawing positive artistic attention to this forgotten region.

Merci à tous les Borains. The exhibition in the two Van Gogh houses of the Borinage was made possible with the support of the Fondation Mons 2025, the Centre culturel Colfontaine and Visit Mons.
