Exhibition The House
'On 13 March 2012, the house where the photographer Karin Borghouts’ parents lived was almost entirely consumed by fire. Before she could even think about cleaning it up, she did the best thing she could have done. As a tribute to the place where she had spent her youth, she picked up her camera and walked into the house.
The photos Borghouts made then became the exhibition ‘The House’. We see books on a shelf, candlesticks, a collection of oil lamps, mirrors, bathrobes in the wardrobe – everything is covered in a layer of grey dust that gives the objects an aura of surrealism, with an unmade bed as the tragic climax.
Almost every trace of colour has leached from the objects; only a fragment of Van Gogh in its banal frame is still putting up a fight. The pages are draped in mourning black that flows over the edges.'
