Karin Borghouts became fascinated by Van Gogh after photographing a reproduction of one of his paintings in her parents burned-out home. This marked the beginning of a long journey in Van Gogh’s footsteps. The obvious starting place was his birthplace, Zundert, where she photographed the church and landscapes, as well as making an extensive series of photos of Vincent’s godmothers’ house that is facing demolition. Her travels took her onwards to the Borinage, Nuenen, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise. She supplemented the images of these places with photographic interpretations of his still lives. They are collected in the publication ‘Vincent was here’. This book, an attractive follow-up to the earlier publications by Emmy Andriesse (1953) and Paul Huf (1990), is a work of art in itself. A special edition will be on offer at the exhibition with a signed print by Borghouts.
