RTT buildings in Belgium
2018-2019
In fall 2018 Karin Borghouts and Filip Dujardin were commissioned by Proximus to photograph a number of former RTT buildings in Belgium. A book on this subject with text contributions by, among others, architectural critic Marc Dubois was published at the end of June 2019. The book is a coöperation of Art Proximus and CIVA. Two of Karin’s personal artworks are also included in the Proximus Art Collection.
Telephony was invented by the American Graham Bell in 1876. The telephone with a dial and digits appeared in 1892. Telephony developed and spread rapidly in Europe. The telephone exchange, together with the post office, became a symbol of modernity and progress. The RTT (Regie voor Telegraaf en Telefoon), founded in 1930, entrusted its most emblematic buildings to renowned architects. The book 'Architecture and Telephony' uses archival and historical photographic material to illustrate this development. Two renowned photographers, Karin Borghouts and Filip Dujardin, offer a contemporary view of this heritage.
